The highest degree awarded at colleges and universities is the doctor of philosophy degree (PhD). The successful graduate must display superior knowledge, understanding, and research skill in their area of study. Some doctoral programs like business administration, education, and engineering, require graduates to demonstrate mastery of field specific skills and proficiencies. In many doctoral programs candidates must first have completed a master's degree before beginning their doctoral work.
