Capella University

A Degree at Capella University

Capella University In order to help people continue their education and earn a variety of degrees without disrupting their current work schedule, Capella University was created. Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka, wished to establish a system of learning different than that of traditional universities. He wanted to offer a way for students to participate in classes without being subjected to conventional limitations and restrictions. He wanted learning to be convenient for students wherever they may be; home, traveling, or in some other remote location.

Shank joined up with Dr. Harold Abel, former president of three different universities. And together, in 1993, they began The Graduate School of America. Their intention was to provide online master's and doctoral degrees in education, management, and human services.

In 1997, membership into the North central Association of Colleges and Schools was presented to The Graduate School of America. The school was also honored with accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission. After attaining accreditation, the five schools in existence today (education, management, human services, technology, and psychology) were instated by the university. At that point the University Changed it's name from The Graduate School of America to Capella University.

More than 11,000 students now enjoy the undergraduate and graduate programs offered through Capella University. With 70 areas of specialties and 650 courses, Capella provides a wide range of specialized areas to study from. The backgrounds of the students studying at Capella are extremely diverse and are comprised of not only working Americans, but of students worldwide. The goal of many students, to conveniently earn a first-rate education, has become a reality thanks to Stephen Shank's vision of what could be.
